St Patrick's College,Maghera into Corn na N-og Quarter Finals
St Patrick's College, Maghera qualified for the quarter final
of the Ulster Colleges Corn na N-og football competition after
completing their group section and finishing joint top of the
section A alongside St Patrick's Cavan and St Michael's Enniskillen.
With four wins from five games it was a very successful league
campaign with the only defeat to St Patrick's, Cavan in the opening
game. Since that defeat the team went on from strength to strength
to defeat St Pius X, Magherafelt , St Patrick's, Armagh, St Macartans,
Monaghan and last years Dalton winners St Michael's, Enniskillen
in the final game of the section.
The opposition in the quarter final is still not finalised but
it will take place at the start of February. Favourites for the
Corn na N-og title would be St Michael's Enniskillen plus Omagh
CBS and St Patrick's Dungannon (who contested last years Dalton
final).

COMPETITIVE SEASON UNDERWAY IN St. PATRICK'S
The new school year brings the beginning of a very busy season
of Gaelic games in St. Patrick's Maghera. The first term sees
College teams competing in early season competitions in football,
hurling and camogie - these just some of the 18 different teams
which will compete in the College colours, across the three codes,
throughout the school year. Within the College that first term
brings also one of the most keenly contested competitions of the
entire school year - the St. Mary Building Shield. This tournament
is for first year pupils only and is made up of seven teams representing
the different classes at the College's junior site. The classes
are divided into two groups for the league stages with the top
2 teams in each group qualifying for the semi-finals - all games
played during lunch-time allowing for quite some partisan support
to spectate at the various games. Notable this year was the involvement
of girls on a number of the teams, their performances reflecting
the growth of the ladies game in the area.
Early round games would see 8D1 make an early exit with defeat
in their two opening games although their subsequent draw with
8A1 would see the top 2 positions in the group in the balance
right up until the last game when 8A1's defeat of the previously
unbeaten 8B1 allowed the A1 boys grab the second semi-final spot
ahead of the unfortunate 8C1. The game of the early rounds came
in group B where 8B2 and 8A3B3 played a keenly contested draw
and with both teams going on to defeat 8A2 they were assured of
semi-final places where both again showed their quality with 8A3B3
defeating 8B1 and 8B2 defeating 8A1.
With all of Year 8 spectating quite an atmosphere was created
and the scene was set for a repeat of the earlier league game
between the two teams. 8A3B3 would enjoy the better of the first
half with Se McGuigan, Vincent Duggan, Michael Warnock and Conor
O'Kane ensuring a half time lead for their team. They had though
struggled at times to cope with the strong running of both Ryan
Winton and Kelvin White for 8B2. These two, along with Brian Og
McGilligan, Michael Scullion and Michael Taggart in goals would
make the difference for 8B2 in the second half as they gradually
took control of the game and more importantly began to show their
dominance on the scoreboard. 8A3B3 were struggling for scores
although 8B2 did need a particularly impressive defensive display
from Christina Kielt to retain their lead through to the final
whistle. With celebrations enjoyed by players and spectators alike
8B2 captain Emmet Bradley received the St. Mary Building Shield
from head of sport Mr. P. Hughes.

IT'S THAT WINNING FEELING!
8B2 team can laugh at it all now - to the victor the spoils.

SO NEAR AND YET SO FAR!
8A3B3 can only think about what might have been.

Year 8 Hurling Competition
in Maghera
Over the past number of weeks a Year 8 class hurling
league was run in St Patrick's College, Maghera. The classes were
divided into 4 teams with each team playing each other once, followed
by 2 semi-finals and a final.
There was some great hurling played in the league stages with
the balance of power being evenly distributed, as after the league
games there were 3 teams on level points. The semi-finals were
exciting matches with 8A2/8B2 defeating 8A1/8C1 in the first match.
In the other semi 8D1/8A3 defeated 8B1/8E1.
The final was a fantastic spectacle of hurling with the match
going down to the wire. Each team were lead from the front by
their captains Sean Murray (8D1/8A3) and Mark McAtamney (8A2/8B2).
Sean was ably assisted by Oisin O'Doherty and Cathal O'Loan who
always had an eye for goal. Mark had great support from his full
back Martin McQuillan and up front by Ciaran Farren. A special
mention must go to both goalkeepers, Darrel Shaw and Kevin McKeefry,
who pulled off some great saves. With time up both sides were
level when referee, Mr Lockhart, called sudden death - next score
wins. Both teams drove hard for the next score. 8D1/8A3 had the
first opportunity and drove forward only for the ball to go narrowly
wide. Kevin McKeefry pucked the ball out long, Mark McAtamney
collected it and sent it into the square. The first shot produced
a fine save from Darrel Shaw only for Ciaran Farren to pounce
on the rebound and send it to the net. 8A2/8B2 were victorious.
Ciaran Farren received the man of the match award after a fine
scoring display. Their were several candidates for player of the
tournament, Sean Murray, Oisin O'Doherty, and Christopher Bradley
to name but a few, but the award went to the winning captain Mark
McAtamney who played excellently throughout.
Congratulations must go to all those involved as the tournament
was played in great spirit. A year 8 hurling squad shall now be
selected to represent St Patrick's College at the year 8 blitz
tournament on 12th June.

'St Patrick's,Maghera-Ulster Camogie
Champions'
St Patrick's College,Maghera retained their Ulster
Senior Camogie schools title when they defeated neighbours, St
Mary's Magherafelt in the final last Saturday on a scoreline of
2-8 to 0-2 which was played on a splendid Dunloy pitch.
This was Maghera's third Ulster Senior Camogie title in a row
and their tenth in total. A great achievement for the school.
A massive second half performance from the Maghera girls who had
trailed at half time by a single point was enough to pull Maghera
through.
Once Claire McCloy had edged Maghera ahead in the 41st minute
there was going to be no turning back.
The last fifteen minutes saw three great goal strikes from Briege
Convery, Claire McCloy and Clare Quinn to wrap up victory.
Great all round performances from captain Aideen Mullan and Laura
Glass in defence alongside the hard working midfield pairing of
Briege Convery and Claire McCloy.Up front Donna McGill and Therese
Dillion posed numerous problems for the Magherafelt defence.
Coaches of the Maghera girls were Catriona Scott and Anne Quinn
who were clearly delighted at the final whistle.Maghera now go
forward to play the Leinster champions in the All-Ireland semi-final
in March. The venue will be a home venue for Maghera .They will
want to go one better than last year when they were defeated in
the
All-Ireland final

All-Star Hurling Recognition for Maghera
Students
Four students from St Patricks College, Maghera recently
gained Bank Of Ireland Hurling All-stars. Present holders of the
Mageean Cup, St Patricks Maghera claimed victory with a
last minute goal over the defending champions St Marys ,Belfast
in an absorbing final. This brings the total All-stars which the
school have claimed in hurling to a record 58 awards over the
past 17 awards. They are the only school to have gained recognition
in every single year. The four students who achieved the awards
were Mark Lynch, Philip McGlade, Michael Kirkpatrick and Brendan
Mullan.
Mark Lynch, captain of the St Patricks, Maghera side
was selected at centre half back. He now possesses two Mageean
Cup winners medals and at present he is also captain of the schools
MacRory Cup team.
Philip McGlade received his first award at right half
back and it was a just reward for his performances throughout
the Mageean campaign.
Brendan Mullan picked up his second successive award.
Last year he was selected at left-half forward and this year he
gained the midfield slot.
Last years Foresters Cup captain, Michael Kirkpatrick
picked up the full forward position. This adds to the two Mageean
winners medals which he already holds.
The All-star awards will certainly give the Maghera team a considerable
boost as they prepare for the All-Ireland OKeefe Cup stages
in March.

Abbey CBS 1-6 St. Patrick's, Maghera 1-11
08 Dec 2003, 14:00
Venue: Killeeshil
This game in the league had little overall impact on the final
standings. Holders St. Patricks College Maghera got off
to a terrific start against Abbey CBS. Jonathon Nelsons
16th minute goal put them 1-4 to 0-1 ahead. However the Abbey
scored three unanswered points before half-time, at which point
they lost the influential Mícheál ORourke
through concussion.Maghera awoke from their slumber to score three
points in a row. Abbey responded with two points from James McGovern
and Stephen Quinn, but four further Maghera points two
of them from full-forward Charlie Kielt left James McGoverns
55th minute goal a mere consolation for a team that must pick
themselves up for the Monaghan challenge on February 7th.
St. Patricks Maghera : Jonathon Nelson 1-1, Charlie Kielt
0-4, Mark Lynch 0-3, Declan Graffin 0-1, Ruairí McCloskey

St Patrick's, Maghera Advance To
Corn na N-og Cup Quarter Final
St Patrick's College, Maghera currently Corn na N-og champions, qualified
for the quarter final of the BT Ulster Colleges Corn na N-og Cup
where they will face St Patrick's Armagh in late January. Maghera
were placed alongside Omagh CBS, St Michael's College, Enniskillen,
Abbey CBS Newry and St Patrick's Cavan in what was an extremely
tough qualifying group.
Their final group game which saw Maghera play St Patrick's Cavan
resulted in automatic qualification for the knock-out stages.
Despite being nine points down to their Cavan opponents with twenty
minutes left, Maghera showed tremendous spirit to score a goal
and seven points without reply to put them a point up with time
up. Cavan to their credit managed to equalise in injury time and
a draw was a fair result.
Niall O'Kane managed to score a goal and seven points from play
and he is in fact a younger brother of last year's MacRory Cup
and Hogan Cup captain, Gerard O'Kane. Other people to shine in
this crucial game was Christopher Lagan and Chistopher McKaigue
in defence while up front James Kelly and Eunan O'Kane starred.
Facing them in the Quarter-final will be the highly fancied St
Patrick's Armagh who easily qualified from the other section.
Already tipped as favourites for the competition ,St Patrick's
Armagh will face a St Patrick's College, Maghera who will not
want to give up their title without a challenge. A tremendous
game is in prospect and no doubt Maghera's managers Martin Mc
Connell and Sean Martin Lockhart, the Derry and Ireland star will
prepare for the game diligently.
In total fourteen clubs from Derry and one from Antrim are represented
on the panel of players. Derry clubs represented include:Slaughtneill,
Lavey, Ballinascreen, Castledawson,Newbridge, Bellaghy, Dungiven,
Banagher, Drum, Swatragh, Greenlough, Glenullin,Glen and Foreglen.
Antrim's representative is Cargin.

Three in a Row
for Maghera School
St Patrick's College, Maghera have always had a great level
of success in Ulster College Hurling and recently the school's
McNamee Hurling side picked up another Ulster title.
What made this victory more important was that it was the
third McNamee success in as many years. Managed by Mr Thomas
Cox the team overcame St MacNissis Garrontower in an exciting
final played in Dunloy two weeks ago.
Captained by Paddy Kelly ,he led in the footsteps of Sean
McNicholl(2001) and Christopher McKaigue(2002).
Certainly the future of Hurling in St Patrick's College
and Derry looks very bright and with continued work future
success is guaranteed.

BANK
OF IRELAND MAGEEAN CUP FINAL
'St Patrick's Maghera Clinch Mageean Cup'
St. Patrick's Maghera 2-6 St. Mary's Belfast 1-8
St Patrick's College, Maghera clinched their tenth Mageean Cup Hurling
title after an absorbing encounter with last years winners St Mary's
Belfast by a single point after a great battle between the two top
schools in Hurling in Ulster.
Those present at Dunloy witnessed an unbelievable game of Hurling
with the game in the balance until the final whistle. Played in
wet and windy conditions the level of skill and the competitive
nature of the game was clear for all to see.
It was certainly the case that the young students from Maghera certainly
became men with an awesome display of grit and determination. With
time up it was the Maghera men who trailed by two points and one
last attack resulted in a goal by substitute Pauric McCloskey after
he got on to the end of Mark Lynch strike. Within seconds the referee
James McLean had blown the final whistle to the delight of the many
Maghera supporters who had travelled to the game via bus and car.
|
|
Maghera's young guns the McNamee team who had
just clinched their title formed a guard of honour for the
Mageean Cup team as they ran on to the pitch.
Maghera's victory was built upon the athletic prowess of their
captain and All-Ireland minor football medallist Mark Lynch,
who also picked up the Coopers' Pharmacy Player of the Match
- just ahead of St. Mary's pair Liam Knocker and Conor McGoldrick
and his own midfielder Brendan Mullan. He dominated the game
from centre-half back with his powerful fielding and strength
on the ball |
Credit goes to both teams who played the game in a great sporting
manner and the St Mary's players were clearly devastated at the
final whistle after being so close to the finishing line but the
old cliché that the game is not over to the final whistle
certainly ran true this time. St Patrick's
Nevertheless when the game was going away from his side, he switched
to full-forward and had a couple of blocked attempts before he
caught Michael Kirpatrick's high centre, turned and blasted for
goal.
St. Mary's defence yet again blocked - but Pauric McCloskey reacted
fastest followed in and scrambled the sliotar to the net.
It was heartbreaking for St. Mary's and in particular their defence
who held firm despite conceding a goal to Gareth O'Kane in the
third minute.
However Maghera introduced three forward subs who all made
an impact - particularly Michael Kirkpatrick , who immediately
began to run at the St Mary's defence and panic began to
set into their play. |
However Maghera failed to build on the goal despite outfield dominance
and the holders gradually worked their way into the game with
scores from the corner-forwards - Liam Boyle and Colm McFall -
closing the deficit to 1-2 to 0-3 at the break.
Then they took the lead within 30 seconds of the restart, when
a speculative long-range effort from Ciarán Mulholland
dropped into the Maghera net.
St. Mary's built on this lead with two 65s from captain Liam Knocker
and points each from Mulholland and Conor McGoldrick put them
1-7 to 1-3 up and apparently on course to retain the title.
However Maghera introduced three forward subs who all made an
impact - particularly Michael Kirkpatrick , who immediately began
to run at the St Mary's defence and panic began to set into their
play.
Diarmuid Brunton could have goaled with the first of his two points
in the 52nd and 55th minutes. It was now a two point game, but
Colm McFall pointed a free to relieve the pressure with 4 mintues
on the clock.
Lynch was now at full-forward. He pointed a 30 metre free with
two minutes to go and was at the heart of the move that resulted
in that dramatic late goal from McCloskey that changed everything.
Captain Mark Lynch received the Mageean Cup amidst scenes of celebration
from the large Maghera following . In his acceptance speech he
signalled out the contribution St Mary's Belfast played in the
contest and he thanked them for a great sporting game. He was
high in praise for all his team mates and he emphasised it was
a 33 man panel who led them to victory and not just the fifteen
men on the field.
Maghera now go forward to represent Ulster in the All-Ireland
O'Keefe Cup Stages and manager Mr. James O'Kane will no doubt
set his sights on achieving All-Ireland glory with the college.

BT MacNamee Cup Final
'Historic Victory for Maghera School'
St. Patrick's Maghera 3-2 St. MacNissi's Garron Tower 0-0
St. Patrick's Maghera had double joy on Saturday when their Junior
hurlers collected an historic third consecutive BT MacNamee Cup
in Dunloy when they accounted for the challenge of St. MacNissi's
Garron Tower.
Throughout the game both side managed to play some great open
hurling despite the wind and rain but it was Maghera who came
out on top with some great passages of hurling.Oran O'Kane was
very composed in goals whilst in defence James Laverty and Ryan
McElhinney dealt comfortably with anything St. MacNissi's could
throw at them. They were helped by the skilful Mark O'Kane and
Sean Cassidy alongside them in defence. In midfield Eunan O'Kane
ran the show with a great display of running and scoretaking.
He ended up to scorer with two goals and two points His partner
was Darragh McCloskey who posed endless problems with strength
and power.. Up front Donal McGilligan and Christopher Henry battled
like veterans for every ball which went in. Dermot O'Neill at
full forward was to the fore front of most Maghera moves.
 |
St. Patrick's Maghera were the stronger
team in the first half and deserved to lead at
the break on the scoreline
3-1 to 0-0but this
does not do justice to
St. MacNissi's who always gave their best.
|
St. Patrick's Maghera were the stronger team in the first half
and deserved to lead at the break on the scoreline3-1 to 0-0 but
this does not do justice to St. MacNissi's who always gave their
best.
St. MacNissi's Garron Tower fought hard and hadn't much luck in
front of goals although it must be said that the Maghera defence
- dominated by James Laverty and Ryan McElhinney - was very compact.
In the second half, Garron Tower had a lot to do with Maghera
playing with the aid of a strong breeze but the weather conditions
were not favourable to the young hurlers from both sides. St.
MacNissi's Seán Birt, Paul Morgan, Shane Quinn, Aaron Cosgrove
and Ciarán McGarry all tried hard but they could not match
the ferocity of a well prepared Maghera side led by coach Mr.
Thomas Cox who created his own piece of history as it was his
third McNamee Cup success in as many years. Certainly this bodes
well for the future of hurling in Maghera.

Captain Paddy Kelly received the trophy
from the Ulster Colleges and went on to thank St. MacNissi's
for a sporting game and thanked all the Maghera players
for the commitment they put in since September.

St. Patricks Celebrate
a Remarkable Sporting Year
As the school year begins St. Patricks College, Maghera
can look back on a very successful extra-curricular sporting year
in Gaelic games. College teams managed to win 8 different A
grade Ulster Colleges competitions, while ten other teams
from St. Patricks competed in competitions at different
age levels a number of these teams reaching the finals
and semi-finals of those competitions before losing out. St. Patricks
is one of very few schools to compete at senior grade in all three
codes of Gaelic games and this years success will be celebrated
and remembered by all those associated with the College.
Highlight of the year was certainly the capture of the Hogan
Cup for the fourth time in the schools history although the senior
girls reaching the All-Ireland senior camogie final was also a
special day for St. Patricks. Ulster senior champions in
gaelic football, (the MacRory Cup), and in camogie the College
narrowly lost out in the senior hurling final, (the Mageean Cup).
This though was a forerunner to the College dominating hurling
thereafter with the Forresters (U-16.5), the Gallagher (U-14.5),
and the MacNamee (U-13.5) all being won by the St. Patricks
hurlers the Year 8 team unfortunate to lose out in the
semi-final of their competition.
Alongside the senior camogie triumph the College Junior team
were also crowned Ulster Junior Champions the U-16 7-a-side team
losing in the Ulster final and the U-14s and Year 8 teams reaching
their semi-finals talent in abundance for the years ahead
in camogie.
The Senior footballers winning the MacRory and Hogan cups were
outstanding memories for the College and it was the Corn na Nog
(U-14.5) footballers who started the victory roll when they won
their competition the weekend before the MacRory final. Rannafast
(U-16.5) and DAlton (U-13.5) football teams lost out at
the quarter final stages but this will perhaps sharpen the appetites
of those players for the years ahead. The Year 8 footballers lost
out narrowly at the semi-final stage of their competition.
With such a volume of teams competing, St. Patricks is
fortunate to have so many teachers prepared to take part in after
school sport and the College is indebted to those people for all
their time and effort given voluntarily during the year. It is
these people who have helped to make successful years in
St. Patricks College possible.

Ulster Colleges First Year Blitz
St Patricks College Maghera first year football side travelled
