This
year, 2006, Aghyaran St Davog’s GFC celebrate the 50th
Anniversary of the club’s formation in 1956. As part of the
anniversary celebrations the club has decided to revive an important
part of the club’s history, the Devine Cup. The tournament is being
generously sponsored by McHugh Fuels, Ederney.
In 1964 the Devine family from
Mullinabreen, Aghyaran presented the Devine Cup to the Aghyaran St
Davog’s GFC club. From 1956 right through to the present day the
Devine family have served the St Davog’s club with great distinction
as players, administrators and club supporters.
The first Devine Cup tournament was
played in 1964 and was a 7 a side event won by Glenties from
Donegal. From 1965 it was run as a 15 a side tournament.
In the 1960s & 1970s club
tournaments were very popular with players and spectators and in its
early years the Devine Cup attracted large crowds and was an
important club fundraiser.
The tournament greatly helped the
promotion of Gaelic football in the parish as large numbers of local
people attended the games to watch the top club teams and players
from Tyrone, Donegal, Derry and Fermanagh in action.
However as the popularity of
tournaments declined the Devine Cup like many other club tournaments
fell by the way side and hasn’t been organised for the past number
of years.
The St Davog’s club are now
re-launching the Devine Cup as an U-21 Inter County Football
Tournament.
By organising this tournament the
club hope to once again make the Devine Cup a prestigious event that
will help to promote Gaelic football in the local area.
In 2006 the teams taking part will
be Tyrone, Derry, Cavan and Mayo.
